Alert centenarian Derek Foster claims the secret to his long life is quaffing six pints of real ale every day.
Derek turned 100 this week and celebrated with a tipple of his favourite Adnams beer.
“I have six pints a day – one in the morning, two in the afternoon and three at night, and that has kept me fit as a fiddle for as long as I can remember.
“If I did happen to feel a little poorly, I would add an extra couple of pints and then fall asleep.
“When I wake up, I’m fine again.”
Derek, of Saxmundham in Suffolk, used to drink his daily quota of beer down his local pub.
But as he is getting on a bit, he tends to stay at home and open some cans.
“It really is the secret of long life,” he explained, glugging on another beer. “But it does give me a bit of trouble with wind.”
Granddaughter Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “We do his weekly shop. It’s a bit embarrassing because the trolley is basically full of beer.
“Still, it keeps him fit and happy.”
Derek used to work as a taxi driver, but when drinking six pints a day became an issue with the boss, he retired back in 1985.
He then tried his hand at helping out behind the bar of a pub in Ipswich but was asked to leave after spending more time drinking with, rather than serving customers.
He was married for 40 years until his wife ran off with the local coal merchant.
