NICE, FRANCE – Rock superstar Sir Elton John, 77, has enlisted the talents of a trainee tiler from Levenheath, Suffolk. To re-tile the rear entrance of his luxurious villa in Nice, France.

This unlikely collaboration was born in the unlikeliest of places. A nightclub in Monaco where both men happened to be holidaying.

The story goes that after a chance meeting and a few enthusiastic conversations. Elton John was shown photos of Barry Holdsworth’s previous tiling work. Impressed by the 24-year-old’s craftsmanship. John decided to hire him on the spot, giving him complete creative freedom over the design.

Hosted a bevy

Elton John’s villa in Nice is as dazzling as the man himself. Built in the 1920s as an artists’ colony, it boasts panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and has hosted a bevy of famous guests over the years. Including Harry and Meghan and their son, Archie, in 2019.

The villa, dubbed the ‘summer palace is repainted in a cheerful yellow and is nestled beside a national park. Accessible via a winding road flanked by ancient, windswept pine trees and terminating at an imposing set of metal gates.

Holdsworth’s reimagining of the villa’s hallway has certainly caused a stir. Images of the completed work posted on his TikTok account reveal a bold Moorish-style design featuring several geometric cocks. A choice that has both amused and bewildered viewers.

John himself is said to be delighted with his newly reinvigorated back passage.
